Lamb Continues Dream Season With Super Comp Win, Near Double in Sonoma

SONOMA, CA (July 30, 2009) - 22-year-old Justin Lamb is in the process of assembling a resume that lifetime sportsman competitors would drool over. Lamb, a UNLV student and Las Vegas resident, picked up his sixth NHRA National event title, and third of the 2009 season when he won Super Comp last weekend at the NHRA Fram-Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, CA. Lamb nearly added a fourth 2009 NHRA “Wally” trophy to his collection the same day, as he narrowly missed becoming the eleventh driver in NHRA history to “double” (winning two categories at the same event), when he lost the Super Stock final to professional sportsman racer Mark Faul. Lamb joined a very short list of competitors to have claimed NHRA national event victories in three different categories within the same season (only Jeg Coughlin, Jr. has won in four separate classes in the same year), as he took the Super Gas crown at the season-opening Winter Nationals, and added a Super Stock title just two weeks ago at the Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO prior to his win last weekend.

“Words can’t describe how amazing this run has been,” said a jubilant Lamb. “I feel like our team works really hard; we’ve got great equipment, we’ve got great sponsors, and we put a lot of effort into this racing program. But that doesn’t warrant this type of success. I’ll never say that I’m surprised to win; I think everyone comes to the track prepared for victory. But I never expected to enjoy so much success all at once. It’s been phenomenal, and we’ve been very fortunate.”

In addition to Lamb’s three national event victories in five final round appearances in 2009, friend and traveling partner Ryan Herem earned the Super Comp title at the NHRA Summer Nationals in Topeka, KS at the wheel of the same Race Tech dragster that Lamb drove to victory last weekend. The same car, in fact, is developing quite a history, as Lamb also drove it to his first national event win three years ago (at the JEGS Pacific SportsNationals in Top Dragster), and the Super Comp crown at Sonoma in 2007. Peter Biondo wheeled the same machine to a $42,000 windfall, winning the Ultimate Gambler Shootout at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in November of last season.

Lamb has continued to display his versatility and cool under pressure all season. He is a legitimate threat to match Coughlin with national event victories in four categories by season’s end. He has already claimed triumphs in Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Stock, and has a divisional victory in Competition Eliminator.

“Winning a national event in Comp would be really special,” said Lamb. “Certainly, matching anything Jeg Coughlin, Jr. has done would be a major accomplishment. But, for the guys at Madcap Racing Engines, and everyone who has contributed to our team, a Comp win would be huge. It’s such a competitive class, and there is so much that goes into having a winning combination. I’d love to add a victory in Comp at the national level, and I think we’ve got a realistic shot at doing so this season.”

To earn his Super Comp victory in Sonoma, Lamb was nothing short of sensational throughout the seven rounds of competition. In his first national appearance in Super Comp all season, Lamb’s worst reaction time in eliminations was .015. More impressive yet, his last five rounds were completely outstanding. He used a .007 reaction time to dispense world championship contender Tom Bayer in round three. He then knocked off national event winners Larry Scarth and Val Torres, Jr. in round four and five with respective .003 and .011 reaction times. Lamb was not done, however, as he saved his best for last. He used a .002 reaction time to defeat Don Meziere in the semi-final round, then improved on that with a telepathic .001 reaction time to best Mike Hiatt in the final.

During the process of tearing the Super Comp category to shreds, Lamb was also weaving his way through a very talented Super Stock field. Hot off the heels of his Super Stock victory two weeks prior in Denver, Lamb qualified on the pole in Sonoma and knocked off former national event winners Brad Plourd, Brad Rounds, and Tibor Kadar before coming up short alongside Faul in the final round.

In addition to his parents, Chris and Carole, Lamb thanked team partner V. Gaines and several marketing partners for their role in his team’s continued success. Those partners include Goodyear Tires, Madcap Racing Engines, Race Tech Race Cars, Biondo Racing Products, Mike’s Transmissions, Redback Boots, Palmer Electric, Sunstate Companies, Unlimited Trailers, and Joe Gibbs Oil.
